"I couldn't ignore the call of my heart." Kim Joo-yeon, known by her stage name 'Madame Chanson,' left behind 14 years of stable employment to embark on a journey around the world in her 40s with nothing but a few belongings. Her adventure spanned 22 countries and 88 cities over 605 days, telling a rare story of an artist's birth. This was not just a trip; it was a pilgrimage for an artist in search of her true voice.
Captivated by Yves Montand's "Les Feuilles Mortes" during her high school years, she majored in French. Decades later, she studied singing at La Manufacture Chanson in Paris and received lessons from the renowned French accordionist Franck Angelis at the Conservatoire Edgar-Varèse. Although she started her studies abroad in her 50s, her passion was as vibrant as that of much younger students.
What makes her unique is her rare style as a chanson singer who plays the accordion—an uncommon combination in Korea. After performing in the musical "Once," she has been active on various stages, showcasing a new interpretation of Korean and French chansons through her album "Fascination," created with local musicians in Paris. Additionally, she appeared as a curator for the France episode of EBS's "World Theme Travel," demonstrating her deep understanding of French culture.
Madame Chanson's performances transcend mere music; they are artistic experiences enriched by her profound inner world and the diverse emotions she has gathered from her travels. She believes, "Good music transcends generations." She breathes new life into the French chanson genre, reinterpreting 60s and 70s nostalgia with modern sensibilities.
There is special significance to Madame Chanson performing at KOTE in the same location as the historical location of Yeonheungsa, a venue established in 1907 and operated by a Frenchman.
Her journey—stepping out of her comfort zone and continually challenging herself towards her own art—inspires us all to awaken the passions that lie dormant within our hearts.
Her October performance, <Ma Solitude>, held at KOTE, features songs related to love and loneliness, perfectly suited for the autumn season.
Are you familiar with Georges Mustaki's song "Ma Solitude"?
The word 'solitude,' meaning 'loneliness' in French, is a feminine noun. Therefore, he describes solitude in his song as a woman who follows him wherever he goes, singing not of being trapped in loneliness, but of embracing it alongside him.
Have you spent a lonely October? Then let the end of October be filled with a glass of wine and Madame Chanson's songs of love and solitude. It will transform a lonely autumn into an unforgettable fall night.
Listen to the chanson resonate in this space, steeped in the history of the Yeonheungsa, operated by a French owner in 1907. We invite you to a romantic night where melodies seep through the time-worn bricks.
